Responsible Beverage “Alcohol” Service (Bartender) Certification:

Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) training and certification is mandatory for all alcoholic beverage servers in California. Servers must complete an online or in-person course from an approved RBS training provider and pass the CA ABC Alcohol Server Certification Exam.

The certification process consists of three steps:

Step 1 - Register with CA Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) - go to ABC RBS Portal (ca.gov) https://www.abc.ca.gov/education/rbs/ to create an account in the RBS portal, pay the Exam fee** to receive your Server ID NUMBER. 

Step 2 - Complete the Online Training Course

Return back to the website you will use for the online training, Launch training and enter your Server ID number to begin the course. Online training often takes up to 2 hours.

Step 3 - Take the RBS Certificate Exam

To take your RBS Exam, log into your RBS portal with your RBS Username and password. ABC RBS Portal (ca.gov) https://www.abc.ca.gov/education/rbs/ and get your certification.

California Food Handler Card Certification:

The California Food Handler Card Law outlines food safety training requirements for anyone who prepares, stores, serves, and/or handles food.

To receive a food handler card, the law states that you must complete a qualifying food handler training program and pass the final exam with a score of at least 70%.

Please look for a program that is compliant with the California Online Food Handler Program and is ANAB-accredited and fully complies with SB 303 training requirements. In addition, programs should also meet state and federal standards for food safety training outlined in California Retail Food Code 2018 and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's 2022 Food Code.
